Telehealth Weight Loss: Your First Visit

By First Response Doctors Clinic Care Team · · 5 min read

A first telehealth weight-management visit is a full clinical evaluation that happens to take place over video. It is not a questionnaire that ends in a prescription. Knowing the shape of the visit in advance makes it substantially more productive, because most of what the clinician needs — measurements, medication names, history dates — is information only you can supply.

What to have ready

Your current weight measured that morning on a scale you can use again for comparison, your height, and a blood pressure reading if you have a home cuff. Consistency matters more than precision — the same scale each time produces a more useful trend than a more accurate scale used once.

Also have your medication bottles on hand, including supplements and anything over the counter, plus the names of any weight-management medications you have tried before and roughly when. If you have had recent laboratory work, have the report available.

The evaluation itself

The clinician reviews your weight history, prior attempts and what happened with them, current eating and activity patterns, sleep, and conditions that are commonly connected to weight — type 2 diabetes, hypertension, obstructive sleep apnea, thyroid disease, insulin resistance. Contraindication screening is explicit: pregnancy or plans for pregnancy, personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma or MEN2, pancreatitis history, gallbladder disease, and any relevant drug interactions.

This is also where a clinician may conclude that medication is not the right starting point for you, or that laboratory work is needed first. That determination is the reason no legitimate program promises a specific prescription before evaluating you.

The plan you leave with

If therapy is started, you leave knowing the medication, starting dose, how titration will be paced, what side effects are expected versus concerning, what to do if you miss a dose, and where the prescription is being sent. Our default pharmacy routing is the Sam's Club nearest your home, and you can change that to any pharmacy you prefer.

Nutrition targets are specific rather than general — most plans include a daily protein floor intended to protect lean mass while overall intake is reduced. Follow-up is usually monthly, and it can be scheduled evenings or weekends.

Where you can be seen

First Response Doctors Clinic sees patients in-clinic in Silver Spring and by telehealth across Maryland, including Saturday and Sunday appointments. If your plan is one we are contracted with, benefits are verified before your first visit; if not, the published self-pay clinic fee of $150 per month applies and is quoted up front.

How we talk about results

Your clinician sets your goals — many plans target 10–16 lbs/month with strict protein protocols; individual results vary.

Medication, dosing, and candidacy are always determined by a licensed clinician after evaluation. Nothing on this page is medical advice, and no outcome is promised.

Frequently asked questions

Will I get a prescription at the first visit?
Only if the clinician determines it is appropriate after evaluation. Some patients need laboratory work first, and some are not candidates for a given medication.
Do I need a scale at home?
It helps considerably. Weighing on the same scale under the same conditions gives your clinician a trend they can act on.
How often are follow-up visits?
Most programs use monthly follow-up during titration, scheduled at your convenience including evenings and weekends.
